From Little League games to evenings at Grand Prairie Golf Course, this is the west-side neighborhood I grew up in. Let me show you what makes it special.
Westwood is one of Kalamazoo's most established neighborhoods, and it's the place where I grew up. This one's full of memories for me, from riding my bike through the streets to Little League games and afternoons at Grand Prairie Golf Course.
Whether you've lived in Kalamazoo your whole life or you're just curious about one of its most recognizable neighborhoods, let me show you around.
Everything you need is close by. Westwood sits on the west side of Kalamazoo, centered around West Main. One of the things people appreciate most is how convenient it all is. Downtown Kalamazoo is only a few minutes away, US 131 is close by, and just about every daily errand can be handled without driving far. West Main is really the heartbeat of the neighborhood, where you'll find local restaurants alongside national chains, grocery stores, coffee shops, pharmacies, banks, fitness centers, and plenty of locally owned businesses. It's one of those areas where there's always something happening without ever feeling overwhelming.
Frays Park is the neighborhood's gathering place. One of Westwood's great amenities is Frays Park, a classic neighborhood park with a playground, open green space, and plenty of room for kids to run around or neighbors to enjoy an evening outside. What I love about it is that it genuinely feels like a community gathering spot. Whether you're walking the dog, bringing the kids to the playground, or just looking for a quiet place to relax, Frays Park is one more reason so many people love living here.
“When I think about Westwood, I don't just think about streets and houses. I think about the memories that made it home.”
Grand Prairie Golf Course is a neighborhood landmark. You really can't talk about Westwood without mentioning Grand Prairie Golf Course. I spent plenty of time riding my bike past it as a kid, and I managed to squeeze in a few rounds over the years, too. Let's just say I'm much better at showing homes than I am at hitting a golf ball.
The schools are woven into the community. Westwood is also home to several well-known schools that have served generations of Kalamazoo families. Whether it's a Friday night football game, a concert, or a community event, the schools have always been a big part of the neighborhood's identity.
It's a place that still feels like home. When I think about Westwood, I don't just think about streets and houses. I think about riding my bike with friends, Little League games, afternoons at the golf course, and sledding at Hillside Middle School. That's probably why Westwood still feels like home to so many people.
One of my favorite things about it is that it doesn't feel manufactured. The neighborhood developed over many decades, so you'll find homes with real character, mature trees, winding streets, and yards that have had generations to grow. Every block feels just a little bit different.
Let me know if there are other neighborhoods, parks, restaurants, or hidden gems around Kalamazoo you'd like me to feature. The goal here is simple: to help people discover everything that makes Kalamazoo a great place to live, work, and explore.
If Westwood sounds like a place you could see yourself, or you're curious what your own home might be worth in a neighborhood people tend to stay in, I'd love to help. Call or text me at (269) 350-5514, email me at sold@veenstrateam.com, or visit mykalamazoorealestate.com.
