After closing on their home in Wyoming, Michigan, Joel and Annette pose with Jason Veenstra.
For a couple of months, Joel and Annette and I talked about buying a home. The question was always when the time would be right. Annette was my wife Lynda’s college roommate and basketball teammate, and our families have been friends for a long time. So when they were finally ready to look seriously, I was excited to help them take that next step.
Their search took them through Grand Rapids, Grandville, and Wyoming before they bought their home in Wyoming. They compared houses carefully, worked through an inspection, and made the decisions that brought them to closing. It was their journey; our job was to help them feel informed at every turn.
From years of conversation to the first showings
At first, they were simply keeping an eye on what was coming on the market. Then Annette sent me a home she wanted to see, and the search began to feel real. Cindi helped arrange several showings close together so Joel and Annette could compare homes while the details were fresh while David showed them most of the homes during the search.
They were thoughtful about each possibility. The floor plan mattered, but so did the location, the trip to work, space for their family to play outside, the maintenance a yard might need, and the condition of the house. Some homes that caught their attention sold quickly. That meant being ready to look when a promising one became available, while still giving themselves permission to say, “This isn’t the one.”
At times, Joel and Annette felt bad about the number of showings. They worried they were wasting our time. Nonsense! Seeing homes is how buyers learn what fits. Each visit gave them a better basis for comparison and helped them recognize what mattered most. David and Cindi were glad to be part of that process, and I wanted Joel and Annette to have room to make a decision they could feel good about.
Finding a home worth a closer look
They considered homes in several neighborhoods and even explored an earlier offer. That experience gave us more to discuss about a home’s condition and the time needed to investigate it. We kept looking, and eventually the Wyoming home stood out enough for Joel and Annette to make an offer.
An accepted offer is the start of a new set of questions. After the inspections, I gathered information, talked through what they might request from the seller, and explained the options available if they chose to take on some work themselves. They took time to consider it together before deciding how to move forward.
I’ve known Annette for years, but that didn’t make this decision mine to make. My responsibility was to give Joel and Annette candid guidance and enough context to choose what was right for their family.
Joel and Annette sign their closing documents side by side, marking the purchase of their home in Wyoming, Michigan after years of conversations and a thoughtful home search.
Getting the details right through closing
After the inspection, there were still plenty of moving parts. I sent video updates to help them see what had happened and what was coming next. Cindi coordinated with the lender, appraiser, and title company, including getting a mistake in Joel’s name corrected on the closing documents before signing.
Joel and Annette reached the closing table after a search that began long before their first showing. They didn’t rush the timing or ignore the questions that came up along the way. They learned, compared, asked, and chose. That is exactly how I hope buyers will approach a decision this important.
I’m grateful our longtime friendship became part of this chapter. Their closing marks the beginning of a new chapter with the Wyoming home, with the agreed possession arrangements still to be completed.
Joel and Annette, we had a great time guiding you in this process and we hope your new Wyoming home is a sanctuary for your family and is full of joy, laughter, love and hospitality.
