New Construction in Hastings, Michigan: A Closer Look at 2029 Dakota Trail and the Growth Around It
If you haven't spent much time in Hastings, Michigan lately, it may be time for another look.
Hastings has always had a lot going for it—a real downtown, the Thornapple River, local shops and restaurants, Corewell Health Pennock Hospital, Hastings Area Schools and a location that keeps Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Lansing within reach.
But there is another part of the Hastings story that we think homebuyers should know about: Hastings is growing.
And at 2029 Dakota Trail in Jones Crossing, Cornerstone Construction is building a new home that gives buyers an opportunity to be part of that growth without giving up the space and quieter setting that attracts people to Barry County in the first place.
VIEW 2029 DAKOTA TRAIL
A New Cornerstone Construction Ranch in Jones Crossing
2029 Dakota Trail is currently under construction by Cornerstone Construction in the Jones Crossing neighborhood of Hastings, Michigan.
The home is a 1,860-square-foot ranch with three bedrooms, 2.5 baths and an attached three-car garage. All three bedrooms are on the main level, including a spacious primary suite. The open main living area brings the kitchen, dining and gathering spaces together, while the unfinished basement provides additional room for storage now and possibilities for more finished living space later. The basement is also plumbed for a future full bath.
The homesite itself is approximately one acre.
That combination—new construction, a ranch floor plan, a three-car garage and a larger homesite near Hastings—is not something we see every day.
Jones Crossing adds another feature that is difficult to recreate in a typical new subdivision. Residents have access to more than 25 private acres of preserved wildlife habitat along the Thornapple River. You can have a neighborhood setting without feeling like every square foot around you has been developed.
The home is currently listed at $554,914, with completion expected in fall of 2026.
What if you like the location, but not this floor plan?
This is where the conversation gets more interesting.
2029 Dakota Trail is one Cornerstone Construction home, but it isn't the only way to consider new construction in Jones Crossing or the Hastings area.
Cornerstone has additional floor plans and building opportunities, including ranch, two-story and 1.5-story designs. Different plans solve different problems. Some buyers want everything important on one floor. Others need more bedrooms. Some want dedicated office space, a larger gathering area, a different primary-suite arrangement or a home designed with more long-term flexibility.
So if you look at 2029 Dakota Trail and think, I like the neighborhood, I like the builder, but I need a different house, don't automatically cross it off your list.
Talk with us.
The Veenstra Team works directly with Cornerstone Construction, and we can help you understand the other homesites, plans and building opportunities that may be available. We can also help you compare building with buying an existing home so you can make a decision based on the whole picture—not just one listing.
Why consider new construction in Hastings?
There are some practical advantages to buying a newly built home that are easy to overlook when you're comparing houses online.
With new construction, the roof, mechanical systems, windows, appliances, plumbing and electrical systems all begin their useful life with you. Instead of walking into a home and immediately making a list of things that may need to be replaced over the next several years, you can spend more of that time simply living in the house.
Today's construction also gives buyers the benefit of newer building standards, insulation, windows, HVAC equipment and energy-efficiency practices. Newer layouts tend to reflect the way people actually live today, with more open gathering spaces, better storage, larger kitchens, main-floor laundry options and floor plans that can work through different stages of life.
There is also something to be said for knowing the history of your home from day one.
That doesn't mean a new home requires no maintenance, and we still believe buyers should approach new construction carefully. Plans, specifications, warranties, inspections, timelines and final walkthroughs all matter. One of our jobs is to help make sure those details don't get lost in the excitement of watching a new house take shape.
Hastings is growing — and much of that story is Positively impacts the way you live!
One of the things we find interesting about Hastings, Michigan right now is that the growth story isn't just about houses.
There is meaningful commercial investment being discussed and developed around the community, which matters to people considering where they want to live for the long term.
One of the most visible examples is the proposed Meijer Supercenter and gas station. The City of Hastings and Rutland Charter Township have been working through infrastructure and municipal-service issues connected with the proposed development.
For Hastings residents, a project like Meijer is about more than another grocery store. It can mean additional shopping choices, easier access to everyday necessities, new jobs and another significant commercial investment in the Hastings area.
It also says something when a company with Meijer's presence in Michigan identifies a community as a place where it wants to invest.
Downtown Hastings is attracting investment, too
The growth isn't limited to the edges of town.
There is pride in the downtown, as shown by this great locational map painted on a building.
Though the downtown is quiet on a Sunday afternoon, businesses are investing in the area!
Downtown Hastings continues to be an important part of what makes the community different from a typical suburban development. It has its own businesses, restaurants, public spaces and historic character, with the Thornapple River running right through the community.
Investment around the downtown and riverfront is intended to strengthen that area further, including new community and arts space as part of redevelopment near the river.
For someone considering moving to Hastings, Michigan, we think that matters.
You can live on approximately an acre at Jones Crossing, enjoy a quieter neighborhood and natural setting, and still be only a short drive from a real downtown where there are locally owned businesses, restaurants, community events and public gathering spaces.
That is a combination that can be hard to find.
More services without losing the Hastings feel
Growth can be a mixed blessing, and we don't think the goal should be for Hastings to become another Grand Rapids suburb.
Part of what makes Barry County and Hastings appealing is that the community still feels manageable.
You can go downtown. You can spend time along the Thornapple River. You have local businesses and familiar places. Corewell Health Pennock Hospital gives the community significant local health-care access. Hastings Area Schools, parks, recreation and community facilities are part of everyday life here.
At the same time, additional retail, commercial investment and community improvements can make it easier to live locally rather than having to drive to a larger city for everything.
That balance is part of the reason we think Hastings deserves more attention from West Michigan homebuyers.
Location matters more than the Hastings address might suggest
We sometimes talk with buyers who like what they see in Hastings but initially assume it will put them too far away from the rest of West Michigan.
It helps to look at the map.
Hastings sits in a useful position between several larger employment, shopping and entertainment areas. Grand Rapids is to the northwest, Kalamazoo to the southwest, Battle Creek to the south and Lansing to the east.
For people whose work, family or activities take them in more than one direction, that location can make a lot of sense.
And with 2029 Dakota Trail, you don't have to choose between being close to Hastings and having some elbow room. Jones Crossing is just a short drive from downtown Hastings while providing approximately one-acre homesites and access to preserved natural space along the Thornapple River.
Buying a home while it is still under construction
Buying a home before construction is finished is different from buying a house where the seller hands you the keys after closing. Buying when a home is still under construction may give you the time you need to get your current home sold. And sometimes, you get into the process early enough to make some design selections.
There are two timelines that can complement each other!
Cornerstone has the construction timeline: completing the home, coordinating trades, inspections and the remaining work.
You have your timeline: financing, inspections, appraisal, final walkthrough, closing, movers and possession.
The Veenstra Team is helps buyers keep track of what has actually been completed, what remains, what is included in the purchase, how inspections will work and what needs to happen before closing. We also encourage buyers to understand the builder's warranty process and to document final walkthrough items carefully. We can also help you manage the timing of the sale of your current home. When we understand the big picture, we can create a much more seamless move for you.
An anticipated completion date is useful for planning, but until the home is finished and the necessary approvals are in place, buyers should leave themselves some flexibility around movers, lease termination dates and other commitments.
