The Remarkable Story of the Wolters House in Laketown Township

How a remarkable real estate sale, a family's commitment to preserving nature, and a new Holland Christian school came together at Cedar Creek.

The former Wolters Home when it was sold to Laketown Township in 2022. It was purchased by Holland Christian in January 2026.

Some real estate transactions stay with you long after the closing. Our sale of the Wolters House at 6289 147th Avenue in Laketown Township, near Holland, Michigan, is certainly one of those stories.

When the Veenstra Team marketed this unique property in 2022, we knew it would attract attention. The home sat on approximately 2.5 acres, surrounded on three sides by the beautiful woodlands of Wolters Woods Park. Its natural setting, mature trees, and connection to the surrounding park made it an unusual opportunity.

But even we were surprised by the response.

More Than 120 People at One Saturday Open House

During a single 2 hour Saturday open house, more than 120 people walked through the property. The interest was extraordinary.

We received multiple offers from buyers who recognized what made this place special. According to Laketown Township's later account of the sale, the family received more than 39 bids.

In the end, the Wolters family chose to sell the property to Laketown Township, even though higher offers had been received.

That decision reflected something much bigger than the immediate sale price.

For decades, the Wolters family had cared deeply about preserving the natural beauty of this land. In 1992, the family was instrumental in establishing Wolters Woods Park, ensuring that future generations could walk through the woods and enjoy a piece of the natural landscape.

The township's purchase in November 2022 helped protect that legacy.

For us, it was a memorable reminder that real estate decisions aren't always just about the highest offer. Sometimes the future of a property matters just as much as the transaction itself.

A Family's Legacy in the Woods

The history of Wolters Woods reaches back more than 150 years.

Benjamin Wolters acquired the original family property in 1872. Over the following generations, the land became an important part of the family's story.

When development interest began growing around the property, the family faced decisions about its future.

Rev. Lloyd Wolters, whose home would eventually become Cedar Creek, valued the land and the opportunity it gave others to experience nature. Rather than see the surrounding woods developed, the family helped preserve them as a public park.

Today, Wolters Woods Park offers wooded walking trails, a playground, picnic facilities, and a peaceful natural setting in a growing part of the Holland area.

Wolters Woods is an important nature park in Holland and gets glowing reviews from visitors.

When Rev. Wolters passed away in October 2022, the home and adjoining property became available for purchase. The family's decision to accept the township's offer continued the commitment to preservation that had begun decades earlier.

At the time, none of us could have known just how fitting the property's next chapter would become.

From a Family Home to a Place Where Children Learn

After purchasing the property, Laketown Township began considering how the house might best serve the community.

One of the possibilities was educational use.

Holland Christian Schools leased the property from September 2023 through August 2024 as an outdoor learning lab for its Forest School students. The experience demonstrated how well the property could support an educational program built around outdoor exploration.

The school saw something special in the combination of the house, woodland, creek, and surrounding natural environment.

In January 2026, the township approved the sale of the house and approximately 1.77 acres to Holland Christian Schools. The township retained a portion of the original property to incorporate into Wolters Woods Park.

The property would now have a more permanent educational purpose.

Holland Christian gave it a new name: Cedar Creek.

Introducing Cedar Creek Young Fives at Holland Christian Forest School

For the 2026–27 school year, Holland Christian introduced its new Forest School Young Fives program at Cedar Creek.

The program is designed for five-year-old children who would benefit from another year of growth and development before kindergarten.

But Cedar Creek is not simply a traditional classroom in a former residence.

It is part of Holland Christian's nature-immersed approach to learning, which integrates outdoor exploration, hands-on experiences, Christian faith, and early childhood education.

Children have opportunities to discover the natural world around them while developing important academic, social, emotional, and physical skills.

The wooded setting offers countless possibilities for learning.

Imagine children observing the changing seasons, investigating insects and plants, exploring the woods, working together to solve problems, and developing an appreciation for God's creation.

Rather than learning about nature only through pictures and books, they can experience it firsthand.

Holland Christian has worked with the Outdoor Discovery Center in developing its Forest School opportunities, bringing additional experience in outdoor and environmental education.

The Young Fives program is led by Pam Koops, an experienced Holland Christian Forest Kindergarten teacher.

The Property Itself Is Part of the Classroom

One of the most meaningful aspects of this new use is that the natural features that made the property so appealing to prospective buyers are now helping shape the children's educational experience.

The school has made improvements to adapt the home and grounds for young learners, including expanded classroom space, renovated facilities, and a converted mudroom entrance.

The surrounding woodland provides a setting for outdoor discovery throughout the school year.

On any given day, the trees, plants, weather, and wildlife can become part of a lesson.

The property has become a place where children can develop curiosity, confidence, friendships, and an appreciation for the natural world.

And it is particularly fitting that the Wolters family has such a long connection with Holland Christian Schools.

Rev. Lloyd Wolters attended Holland Christian, as did members of his family, and his father taught at the high school roughly a century ago.

When the township consulted surviving Wolters family members about selling the property to Holland Christian, they expressed their support.

The connection between the family, the land, and the school makes this new chapter especially meaningful.

From One Open House to Another

In 2022, more than 120 people came through the Wolters House during our Saturday real estate open house, imagining what the property might become.

Now, four years later, families have another opportunity to visit the property—but this time, they will see how Holland Christian is using it to introduce young children to learning in God's creation.

Holland Christian has scheduled a Cedar Creek Welcome Walk for Monday, November 9, 2026, from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m.

The event will take place at 6289 147th Avenue, Holland, Michigan, and is intended to give prospective families and their children a look at life in the Young Fives Forest School program.

Families interested in exploring the program can learn more through Holland Christian Schools.

More Than a Real Estate Transaction

It is an honor to be a part of family transitions. Thanks Wolters family for the opportunity.

As REALTORS, we help people through some of life's most important transitions. Usually that means helping a family purchase or sell a home.

But sometimes we have the privilege of being part of a story that reaches much further.

When we marketed the Wolters House, the tremendous interest in the property was memorable. More than 120 visitors at one open house and dozens of offers demonstrated just how special the opportunity was.

Yet the lasting story isn't simply how many people wanted to purchase it.

It's what happened afterward.

A family chose to honor its longstanding commitment to preserving a beautiful property. A township helped protect that legacy. And eventually, a Christian school found a way to make the property's natural beauty part of an educational experience for another generation.

A place that once held the memories of one family is now helping create memories for many families.

We think that's a wonderful outcome, and we're grateful that the Veenstra Team had a part in this property's remarkable journey.
